The Charcoal Kiln is used to produce Coal from Logs. For maps with limited or no Coal, this can be a good method to generate this resource other than the Trading Post.
Late game maps may also find that they have depleted all of their Coal resources or that their production demands exceed their mine supplies.
While labor intensive, the Charcoal Kiln has the benefit of using a renewable resource (Logs) as their input.
