    Farthest Frontier

Farthest Frontier is a village survival simulation game developed and published by the American independent game studio Crate Entertainment.

    About the Game

Players take on leadership of a small band of pioneers looking to carve out an existence in an untamed stretch of wilderness, far from their troubled homeland and the aristocracy who neglected their well-being.

The player's goal is to establish a thriving local economy, generate bountiful harvests via the detailed farming system, care for their villagers to stave off the spread of illness, and protect their burgeoning settlement against attacks from both wildlife and the occasional marauding army.

Or not, the choice (and their consequences) are the player's to make!

    Development

Farthest Frontier released into Early Access on 09 August 2022 exclusively on Windows via the Steam game platform. At the time of launch, Crate Entertainment estimated that the game would remain in early access for 8-12 months.

Several hotfixes/patches have already taken place since launch, and can be found on the Version History page on this wiki.

Verbatim developer comments from the Steam early access page (as of 14 Aug 2022):

    Why Early Access?
“We appreciate receiving feedback from a wider player audience to help us determine whether we've met our design goals and are delivering the quality of experience and fun we strive to achieve.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?
“Probably 8-12 months, depending on how much we feel the need to alter gameplay systems or add to the scope of the game before we're ready to call it finished.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?
“Protect and guide your people as you forge a town from untamed wilderness at the edge of the known world. Harvest raw materials, hunt, fish and farm to sustain your advancing town. Produce craft items for your villagers to trade, consume, equip and fight with as you battle for your survival against the elements and outside threats.

All listed features will be working when we release in EA.

Over the course of EA we plan to refine and polish the existing game as well as expanding the late-game with an additional tier of housing, more consumer goods and production buildings, and new ways to extend extraction of resources like stone, ore, etc, after initial sources have been depleted. Other ideas have been discussed and more may be revealed as we progress.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?
“The core systems and features are currently working and there is 20+ hours of gameplay. Players start off with settlers in the wilderness and progress through 4 tiers of town-building and defense against raider incursions. We may elect to expand the game from here but all the features described in the "about" section are working in-game now, some just needing refinement to be considered release-ready.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?
    “Pricing will probably not change.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?
“We will collect user feedback through our forum. We generally look through comments to get a broad sense of overall player impressions of various features or gameplay balance / difficulty and to see if something has been overlooked or is lacking.”

    Official release

An official release date for the 1.0 release from Early Access has not yet been stated, initial targets suggest late 2023 but this is subject to change based on Early Access development. As of the fifth state of development blog, a 1.0 release is now targeting mid-to-late 2024.

    Soundtrack

The soundtrack for Farthest frontier was composed by Steve Pardo.

Additional sound design work was also performed by SkewSound, of which Steve Pardo is a founding member.
