Overview
There are multiple kinds of Buildings, Villagers and Terrain (and designs leveraging some/all of these) that can serve as defense against attacking forces (be they animals or people).
Armor
Considered as either a Villager's first line (if they're out exploring) or last line (if they're inside the Settlement and all other defenses have been defeated) of defense are the clothes on their back. Here are how those options compare.
Item | Armor1 | Cost | Source | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Linen Clothes | 0 | ? | Trading Post, Weaver Building | |
Hide Coats | ? | ? | Tannery, Trading Post | |
Hauberks | ? | ? | Armory, Trading Post | Can only be worn by a Guard or Soldier. |
Platemail Armor | ? | ? | Arsenal, Trading Post | Can only be worn by a Guard or Soldier. |
1 This is how much an attack's effect on the wearer is reduced.

Walls and fences
The game offers walls and fences, both of which serve to keep invading forces at bay.

1 Cost in Labor, Wood, Stone, iron, Clay, Gold
2 These numbers seem suspiciously out of line with all the others. Crate Entertainment has been notified.
What is the labor cost to upgrade a palisade wall/gate to a fortified wall/gate?
If you instead Salvage Building, you will recover 2 Logs (which is the 50% of the original 3 logs investment rounded up) and could then build the fortified wall in its place. Is the benefit of upgrading that the wall is still "there" during the upgrade process, not leaving you vulnerable?
Similar with the palisade gate. Salvaging recovers 6 Logs. It is unknown if upgrading recovers any of the originally invested resources.
