There are multiple Resources, kinds of Buildings, and designs of Terrain that can serve as defense against attacking forces (be those animals or people).

Armor

Considered as either a Villager's first line (if they're out exploring) or last line (if they're inside the Settlement and all other defenses have been defeated) of defense are the clothes on their back. Here are how those options compare.

The issue of the outrageous armor & health values, for both the Hedge Fence Gate & Wrought Iron Fence Gate, was raised with Crate Entertainment as forum post #130368. (2023-09-10)

What is the labor cost to upgrade a palisade wall/gate to a fortified wall/gate?

When upgrading a Palisade Wall to a Fortified Wall the game only indicates that it will cost 3 Stone, and doesn't say anything about the labor cost.

If you instead Salvage Building, you will recover 2 Logs (which is the 50% of the original 3 logs investment rounded up) and could then build the fortified wall in its place. Is the benefit of upgrading that the wall is still "there" during the upgrade process, not leaving you vulnerable?

When upgrading a Palisade Gate to a Fortified Gate the game doesn't say anything about the labor cost, and indicates that it will cost 8 Logs & 10 Stone (even though you've already made a 12 log investment building the palisade gate).

Similar with the palisade gate. Salvaging recovers 6 Logs. It is unknown if upgrading recovers any of the originally invested resources.
